RIM on Windows Mobile

Posted by Bala Iyer on Mon, Apr 23, 2007 @ 09:24 AM

RIM has plans to allow its software and applications to work on devices manufactured by third parties. Currently, RIM makes a significant percentage of its revenue from devices. By allowing interoperation with other devices RIM can sell more software and services. In addition, they can exploit innovations in devices made by third parties. Another story on Google in BW can be found here. A very interesting interview with Eric Schmidt appears in the same issue. He argues that, unlike operating systems, switching costs are very low for search engines. In other words, one doesn't have to worry about Google becoming arrogant and powerful :-)

YouTube rival

Posted by Bala Iyer on Sun, Apr 01, 2007 @ 07:53 PM

NBC and News Corp have announced plans to create a YouTube rival. Given the recent difficulties that YouTube has been having with hosting content from Viacom and others, this is interesting. The other side to the equation is user generated content. While this announcement expects to support such content, nothing unique has been announced in the news release. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for sites like blinkx, revver and brighcove.
