Cloud strategy

Posted by Bala Iyer on Tue, May 08, 2007 @ 07:29 PM

Will companies base all their information systems needs on clouds? Amazon provides a service called S3 to meet all data storage needs. For server capacity they have their EC2 cloud. Higher up in the stack, we have Salesforce.com's AppExchange. Many companies support needs in the application layer by providing software as a service. In addition to this, we have the emergence of mashups as a way to meet information system needs. One can even depend on the cloud for their R&D and services needs by using Innocentive or Mechanical Turk.

This approach makes sense strategically. Companies can focus on their core business and allow the experts to deal with infrastructure, applications and services. The main uncertainty here is the ecosystem. While companies may find a layer or two that meets the needs, can they get an end-to-end solution?

Microsoft and Yahoo

Posted by Bala Iyer on Sun, May 06, 2007 @ 08:03 PM

Both WSJ and NYT ran a piece on this story. Given that Google has a commanding lead over both of them combined, this seems like a logical move. In a market characterized by network effects, once the momentum builds it becomes unstoppable. If this move materializes, they have a shot at stemming the tide. The move, however, is fraught with pitfalls. Would their platforms get integrated into one? Panama is gaining traction and Yahoo! may not be willing to abandon it and operating two separate platforms is not smart. What about being part of a highly diversified software company? Microsoft's attention may be dissipated across several products, while Yahoo! is dedicated to Panama. Google's lead is defended by its ability to innovate and provide new products. Can Yahoo! and Google get its innovation engine cranking? Finally, these two companies are reported to have very different cultures. Can the combined entity have a uniform focus and the ability to execute?
