Is technology making us smarter?

Posted by Bala Iyer on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 @ 06:50 AM

This weekend I read two articles that made me contemplate this question (link1, 2). While the articles deal with the broader notion of technology, I was thinking of the Internet-based versions. Blogs, short articles and relevant search results influence what we think and write. With our basic instincts to conform, are opinions converging very quickly? Do we have few influencers dominating the discussions? Although there are millions of blogs out there, a few emerge as hubs emerge and dominante our attention.

Now to the question of augmenting human intellect... With the glut of readily accessible information from Google that organizes the world's information and makes it universally accessible and useful, do we engage in any second order thinking? In other words, do we treat the Internet as a source of information and use our own neurons to draw conclusions and insights? Given our busy lives, a quick Google search should provide answers to these questions :-)

Best Buy and Innovation

Posted by Bala Iyer on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 @ 08:28 AM

In the last couple of days, I have read at least two articles on Best Buy and its innovative use of technology. WSJ carried a piece on how they are using prediction markets to test and manage new product or service introductions. In one instance they even allowed their system integration partner to view the market information and make mid-course corrections. The second highlight was the use of discussion boards to get a feel for what its associates (115,000 in number) are concerned about. The second big announcement was the acquisition of Napster. With this they get into content distribution and may pose a competitive threat to Apple, Amazon and Netflix. Although I see marketing flyers on Best Buy, I never considered it as an innovative company. I plan to keep on it from now on.

Cloud computing

Posted by Bala Iyer on Sat, Sep 06, 2008 @ 08:20 AM

This technology is reaching the top of the hype curve. Enterprises have to give it a serious look. As I see it, it is a combination of infrastructural services and software as a service. On the plus side, this trend could reduce the complexity of infrastructure within a company by simply using a third party's infrastructure. Similarly, application maintenance costs can be brought down by having vendors provide it as a service. Some issues have to be resolved before this gets accepted like a utility. The key one revolved around data. How do you protect your data from being compromised? In addition, compliance requirements could force enterprises to deal with their own data. With compelling benefits, these issues will be resolved through technology and policy solutions.

Google to release its own browser

Posted by Bala Iyer on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 @ 06:51 PM

Given that IE and Mozilla have already gained traction, I don't understand why Google is releasing a browser and that too under the opensource model. Their fear is that Microsoft can influence search by owning the browser. Why not just use Mozilla and build on it? Is Mozilla not very good or agile? Owning more layers of the stack may not be a great move. This will simply slow the growth of Mozilla, dissipate the attention of Google engineers and create more confusion in the opensource community. I hope they have a good reason for doing this.
